A conference entitled  "Collaborative Clinical Trials in Intensive Care Medicine", was held in Prato, Italy between June 5-7, 2013

Professors Jamie Cooper and Paul Myles organised concurrent scientific meetings for Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at the Monash University conference centre in Prato Italy. Prato is a Monash Campus just outside Florence. There were 70 invited attendees for Intensive Care from 13 countries, and another 40 for anaesthesia.  The critical mass of attendees was just right in a wonderful environment. The focus was building our global capacity to conduct large clinical trials. Plenary lectures on the first day included Professors John McNeil, Andrew Forbes, Rinaldo Bellomo, and Andrew Maas, exploring new models for collaborative research and recent global funding successes.  The next two days focussed first on ECMO with Vince Pellegrino guiding French and American leaders through current and future joint projects, and then traumatic brain injury where the model of inviting European site principals and investigators (from France, Finland, Saudi Arabia, Ireland and Germany) from our active Monash trials led to a diverse and enthusiastic environment. Special thanks to Amanda Martin for her meticulous organisation and coordination, and to Sophie Wallace for coordinating the anaesthetists.
