As part of our targeted efforts to review and improve all aspects of major burns management, new analgesia and sedation flow charts have been created and are now being used consistently in all intubated burns patients.
Ventilation days and ICU length of stay have subsequently decreased and patients are more awake and responsive.
This work was presented at the 36th Annual Scientific Meeting Australian New Zealand Burns Association (ANZBA) in Hobart in 2012, and won the Wendy Swift Award (best paper presented by nursing professionals).
The project involved Annabelle Maclure, Melinda Pacquola, Jason McClure, Paul Tynan and Bianca Levkovich.
The talk was written and presented by Annabelle Maclure and Melinda Pacquola.
They received a certificate and $500 for professional development/
The flow charts will be presented at the European Burns Association conference to be held in Vienna on 28-31 August.
So far we have had requests for the flow charts from burns units in France and England.
