The Alfred Foundation has kindly donated a cycle ergometer for use by physiotherapists in The Alfred ICU. This in-bed bicycle is used for rehabilitation in patients who may benefit from exercise but need to stay in bed for medical reasons. In Belgium, one study showed that use of the cycle ergometer for 20 minutes per day improved leg strength at ICU discharge. This may improve our patients ability to walk after long periods of bed rest. The cycle ergometer can be used while the patient is unconscious to move the legs and help stimulate muscles, or it can be used as the patient wakes up and they can participate in the exercise. Several of our patients have used the cycle ergometer as part of the physiotherapy rehabililtation during their ICU stay and have enjoyed the gentle exercise while recovering.
